Treated FR materials require chemical enhancement to build flame-resistance and to achieve these same properties as inherent fabrics. Chemical compounds are incorporated into cotton or cotton-blended products through an ammonia cure and/or heat cure process. These processes bind the FR properties to the fabric at a molecular level, reducing its overall flammability.
Molecular Level
It's worth repeating, treated FR fabrics have been changed at the molecular level. Limited Flammability products have only been sprayed with FR chemicals, meaning the molecular change has not occurred. Read up more here on the difference.
